Pronunciation

I offer accent modification to help you pronounce North American English. I use techniques similar to the speech therapy provided by Speech Language Pathologists and the accent training provided by Dialect Coaches. This includes diagrams, to teach you the proper tongue placement and lip shape, and face exercises to help you develop the right muscles to speak English more comfortably.

Intonation

Intonation is the rise and fall of the voice, or the “pitch patterns” of the voice, while speaking a full sentence. This is different than Tone, which is the rise and fall of the voice over a single syllable.

For those of you who come from a Tonal Language background, like Chinese or Vietnamese, I have developed a pretty unique way to teach intonation. Book in for a lesson today and I’ll teach you the basics for half price.

Word-Choice

The way we speak depends on where we are and who we are talking to. This is called Functional Language.

How do you talk to your boss?

How do you talk to your doctor?

How do you talk at the bank?

These are all formal situations but they are different. I can help with the subtleties of word-choice and advanced grammar to help you feel more comfortable in any situation.

Avoid Cultural Misunderstandings

You probably know as well as I do that rudeness is culturally specific. You may have even overheard complaints or gotten in trouble for doing something and not understood why. Well, on behalf of all native English speakers, I would like to apologize. You are not rude! Things are simply done differently in different parts of the world.

How do you interrupt your boss, to ask a question, during a meeting?

How do you wait for a bus without getting in anyone’s way?

What are the differences in gestures and body language between countries?

Any cultural questions like these are perfectly valid and I would like to help answer them so you can live your life more comfortably.

Comprehension Over the Phone

Let’s face it, speaking on the phone in a non-native language is not easy! But when you have to work over the phone in a non-native language, it can be one of the most intimidating things you’ll have to do.

Did you know that, even in your native language, about 50% of language comprehension is visual? We all read lips and watch for gestures naturally. So what happens when we can’t see the person we’re talking to?

If you have to use the phone for work, I can help you.
